Getting Functional Heads to step up to
shared leadership for the full enterprise
Challenge:
The CEO wanted his senior leadership team to "step up"
more to lead the enterprise. Despite his communicating this
message repeatedly during the year and making repeated attempts
at team development, the top team continued to act more like
a Working Group than a Team. The group continued to delegate
leadership for the enterprise to the CEO
What we did:
- Interviewed all team members for feedback about the teams
role, function, priorities, and the CEO role
- Performed a team function diagnostic survey
- Held an offsite
- Diagnostic data was shared to highlight the issues
and themes
- Members learned new awareness of Accountable Ownership
- Members shared feedback
- And shared new commitments to support the enterprise
and each other across functional lines
- Redesigned team meetings and content
- Instituted new discipline for tracking and revisiting
joint leadership commitments over time
Results:
- CEO highly satisfied with top team's response to step
up to the next level
- Greatly improved, proactive communication among function
heads
- Surfacing issues ahead of time rather than "too
late for action"
- Shorter, more energetic team meetings
- Improved progress on ambitious goals
